KULALA is the story of two women who met in a shop in Zanzibar in 2024. One was looking for a gift for her mother; the other was making that very gift with skill and care in her tiny workshop. They stayed in touch – and KULALA was born.


HABIBA


Habiba is a seamstress in Zanzibar and sells locally made products in a shop on Hurumzi Street in Stone Town.

She is expecting her fifth child and is happy to be able to work from home and watch her children grow up.

In 2024, one question of hers set the KULALA project in motion: “Why don’t you invest in us seamstresses in Zanzibar?”




JANINA


Janina is a co-head and teacher at a Swiss vocational school and is spending her 2026 sabbatical in Zanzibar.

She has an adult daughter who is standing on her own two feet and no longer needs to be watched growing up.

Habiba’s question stayed with her. Her answer was: KULALA.
